October is a wonderful time to be in the preschool classroom. There are so many wonderful things happening in the world around us.
All of creation is our classroom in the fall! We spend as much time as we can looking at the changes taking place right outside our door. We found interesting leaves and pods on the playground. We felt the wind and watched the flag blow. Some of the children gathered leaves to put into our play table.
The children discovered sticks and seed pods in the leaves and watched how they crumbled as they dried. The children used the leaves to hide toy animals and used their imaginations in all sorts of ways.
We looked at many different kinds of seeds and how a plant grows and what it needs to grow. We’ll soon be planting some seeds ourselves. We talked about all the different kinds of food and where we get the food that we eat. It’s interesting to watch the children begin to understand that our food doesn’t just magically appear in the grocery store.
Our whole room is decorated with the colors of fall. We even have snack plates shaped like leaves!
Of course, we have pumpkins and gourds and Indian corn! We had a huge sunflower in our room and we harvested the seeds to feed the birds. We have books about fall and little pumpkins to count in the math area. We painted leaves and pumpkins, too.
We visited a local farm and went on a hay ride. The guide told us all about the vegetables and fruit that grow there. Back in class, the children tasted apples and cider from the farm. Some of our parents made us pumpkin muffins and bread to have for snack. We’re going to bake one of our pumpkins and make something for snack.
All of our studies of nature bring us back to the One who created it for us. We always remember to thank God for our beautiful world.
